Designed with Intention: The Story Behind the Mohair Bonnet

We asked Stacey, Founder of Classical Child and the creative vision behind this season’s newest addition, the Mohair Bonnet, a few questions about the design, inspiration, materials, and intention behind the piece.

How did the idea for this product come about?

The idea for the bonnets really began when I had children of my own. I would dream up pieces I wanted for them and turn to talented family members to help bring them to life. I spent countless hours browsing online, visiting libraries, and pouring over my grandmother’s old knitting and handwork patterns - many of which were simply handwritten notes, quietly passed down through generations.

As that kind of handcraft becomes rarer, and after my grandmother passed away, I felt a strong pull to continue that tradition in my own way. This bonnet is inspired by that - a desire to create something with touches of heritage and nostalgia, reimagined with a modern sensibility. It’s designed to be both an everyday piece and a keepsake, something that can be passed down from child to child.

What does “designing with intention” mean to you in practice?

For me, designing with intention means every decision has a purpose - from the fibre we choose, to the fit, to how the piece will be worn and cherished over time. It’s about slowing the process down and asking: will this last, will it feel good, and does it serve both the child and the parent in a meaningful way?

The cat ears are such a cute touch, what was the inspiration behind them?

The animal ears were inspired by the playful nature of childhood. I love incorporating subtle, whimsical elements - something that sparks joy while still feeling refined. They’re soft and understated, adding a gentle sense of character and a quiet nod to the mischievous spirit children so often have.

Why did you choose mohair specifically for this piece?

Mohair was a very intentional choice. It’s incredibly soft, breathable, and insulating, making it ideal for little ones. It keeps them warm without overheating and has a beautiful, lightweight quality that sits gently against the skin. The fluffy nature of it also softens the look of the bonnet, making it aesthetically appear more luxurious.

Where is the mohair sourced from?

Our mohair is sourced from trusted suppliers in Mongolia who prioritise quality and responsible farming practices. Understanding where our materials come from, and how they are produced, is a key part of our design process.

What makes mohair a special or beneficial fibre for babies/children?

Mohair is such a special fibre for babies and children because it is naturally temperature-regulating, durable, and gentle. It also has a subtle sheen and texture that elevates even the simplest design.

Can you walk us through the journey from idea to finished bonnet?

The journey from idea to finished bonnet is a considered one. It begins with sketching and refining proportions, followed by sampling to perfect the fit - particularly around the face and ties. From there, we work closely with our makers to ensure the construction and finishing align with the original vision. It’s a process of continual refinement until it feels exactly right.

How do you approach sustainability when sourcing and producing your products?

Sustainability is something I approach holistically. It’s not just about the materials, but about creating pieces that are made to last, to be handed down, and to reduce the need for constant replacement. We prioritise natural fibres, thoughtful sourcing, and small-batch production, and we carefully vet all of our suppliers to ensure they meet responsible and ethical textile standards.

What do you hope people feel when they put one of your bonnets on their child?

When someone puts one of our bonnets on their child, I hope they feel a sense of softness, warmth, and nostalgia. There’s something very special about dressing a child in a piece that feels considered and timeless.

What details in the bonnet might go unnoticed, but were carefully considered?

Some of the more subtle details include the proportions around the face to fit many head shapes and grow with the child to fit for more than 1 season, the softness and placement of the ties to avoid irritation, and the way the knit is constructed to allow stretch while maintaining its shape. These are the quiet details that often go unnoticed but make a meaningful difference in how the piece feels and wears.
